Resume Advice & Resources
We have professionals in our congregation who have worked in many areas of the private and public sectors, including the federal government. These skill sets we are making available to you for preparing and sharing your best resume
-
Keep your resume as visually simple and useful as possible. Don't distract from your accomplishments with too many fonts or colors.
-
Edit your resume for each submission by using key words from the job listing. Each time you share your resume make sure that you have edited it to include the key words and terms from the job listing as you describe your work history. Quite often a computer program will filter out your resume if it doesn't find those keywords, and a human doesn’t get the chance to read it and meet you.
-
Be honest and complete in your answers and information. Don't leave any holes or time gaps in your answers. Getting a job can be a job. Filling out forms, remembering previous job history and making edits can be tiring, but slow down, take a deep breath, collect your thoughts, then give all the information requested.
-
Keep things up to date and professional. It's so important to keep your information updated, especially your contact info. While we're talking about contact info, make sure that your cell phone has a professional message in the recording when someone calls and have to leave a message for you. Also, have a somewhat professional email address to share with a prospective employer, not the goofy one you use to communicate with friends!
-
Use appropriate language for the job setting. Listen, be yourself but understand when you’re working for someone, you also represent them. That means that when you are filling out the resume and later doing an interview, make sure that you give them the assurance and confidence that you can represent them well.
Preparing for an Interview
It's rarely easy to interview for a job, but we have some advice to help you prepare.
-
Dress for the occasion. We all have our own style, but you should demonstrate that you can also help reflect the employer's business.
-
Study business etiquette. Look around the internet for the manners and behaviors which will best communicate your skills and abilities and show you as a great potential member of the employer's team. Here's a good example of the help you can find online!
-
Use appropriate language for the job setting. Remember that you should always be you, but you always want to show that you can be a great representative of an employer.
-
Anticipate and be ready for the classic interview questions like these:
What are your strengths? What are your weaknesses?
What interests you in this job?
Where do you want to be in five years?
-
Did you list a skill in your resume? Then be ready to discuss it! Before the interview you should think of some examples of when you used that skill, to answer things like:
When did the skill work?
When did the skill not work?
-
Always be prepared to discuss conflict management. Prospective employers are trying to see if you are able to recognize conflict and constructively resolve it. This is another time you'll probably be asked to give some examples from life or work history.
-
Be prepared to be asked, “What are your questions?” Think of some good questions about advancement opportunities, how you might grow in the position and other opportunities that might come along with employment.
Need some more help? Looking for a community of people who will pray with you, celebrating your successes and staying by you in the times of challenge?
We'd love to meet you. Drop in for worship or one of our other activites on the church campus and say hello.
You're always welcome to reach out to our pastor, Rev. Todd, if you have any questions to get answered before dropping in at St. Timothy's.
Hope to see you, soon!
