This Week at St. Timothy’s
For the Week Beginning October 25th, 2009

Sunday's Gospel Lesson from Mark 10:46 (NRSV)
They came to Jericho. As he and his disciples and a large crowd were leaving Jericho, Bartimaeus son of Timaeus, a blind beggar, was sitting by the roadside. When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout out and say, "Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!" Many sternly ordered him to be quiet, but he cried out even more loudly, "Son of David, have mercy on me!" Jesus stood still and said, "Call him here." And they called the blind man, saying to him, "Take heart; get up, he is calling you." So throwing off his cloak, he sprang up and came to Jesus. Then Jesus said to him, "What do you want me to do for you?" The blind man said to him, "My teacher, let me see again." Jesus said to him, "Go; your faith has made you well." Immediately he regained his sight and followed him on the way.

As Reverend Amuzie spoke, he talked about the many lessons in this one passage. The following is only one parishioner's interpretation.  Hopefully, everyone in attendance took something away from Sunday's sermon that will help them to continue to increase their faith.

Lesson 1:  You had a man who was yearning for Jesus, calling out for him while people were "sternly" ordering him to be silent. Yet he called out until Jesus responded to him.  The lesson?  Do not let others keep you from receiving your blessings.

Lesson 2:  When Bartimaeus threw off his cloak, that act was symbolic of detaching yourself from things you feel are most important to you, things which hamper your ability to receive your blessing and follow Jesus.  As a beggar, Bartimaeus' cloak was more than likely one of the most important things to him.  The cloak kept him warm, covered him from the elements, protected him and yet "...throwing off his cloak, he sprang up and came to Jesus."

Lesson 3:  When Jesus asked Bartimaeus what he wanted him to do for him, Bartimaeus did not ask for all the riches in the world, he simply asked that he might see "again."  Whatever it is that you once had in your life and yearn for again, go to Jesus and pray unceasingly.  You can have peace and love in your heart "again".  St. Timothy's can be the church that you came to love "again".  We have to increase our faith and simply ask Jesus to bless us with those things "again".

"Go; your faith has made you well."

Have a Blessed Week,
Jozetta, Richlyn Ophelia & Stacy
